RYAN QUINN MCINTIRE

I  am a professor of theatre performance, theory, and practice with areas of specialization in movement, combat, and theatre as social discourse.

Most recently I was the Professor of Performance at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. I acted as the department’s Performance Specialist, teaching a variety of theatre courses including Acting, Stage Combat, Improv, and Performance Studies.

Other colleges and universities I have worked with include Old Dominion University, Virginia Wesleyan, the University of Central Missouri, Northern State University of South Dakota, The College of the Albemarle, Regent University, Thomas Nelson Community College, and The Governor's School for the Arts.

I have been a fight choreographer for more than a decade, working on shows such as The Three Musketeers, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and Misery. I have also worked as a stuntman and choreographer for shows appearing on Discovery, Destination America, I.D., TruTV, and CBN.

DIRECTING

In The Whale I was moved by just how trapped Charlie is. He’s trapped in his apartment, in his body, and in his misery. I was struck by the movement between poetry and down-to-earth language, the way the story unfolds of Charlie and his struggles with those few people who he allows around him. We see them need to connect while pushing others away, ask for forgiveness while holding grudges, and so many other real-life juxtapositions that make them all the more recognizable and relatable.

With Antigone I wanted the audience to recognize the similarities between our world and the world of our heroine. I drew connections from Thebes to riots in Missouri and Los Angeles, Greek uprising to protests in Ukraine and Syria, and encouraged audience member to ask themselves: who is to blame when an unjust law is broken, the criminal or the lawmaker?

A User's guide to hell, ft. Bernard Madoff. just the title was enough to pique my interest. this show was a rollercoaster ride of audience participation, spectacle, showgirls, and satire. This was an opportunity for the audience to see what may be in store for Bernie in hell, and experience the schadenfreude that comes with his suffering.

This adaptation of Tartuffe was inspired by commedia in physicality and the use of mask. We worked as an ensemble of double and triple cast actors to bring the characters to life, and interact with the audience in an accessible sketch-comedy style.

RECOGNITION

"I brought [Ryan] in because I knew he could provide something I could not: a deep and artistic understanding of stage violence along with the ability to teach it with excellence"

-John Wilson, Professor and Chair, University of Central Missouri

"[Ryan has] a good sense of praise and encouragement, which is so important in an acting environment where students need to feel safe to explore, take chances and even fail."
-Stephen Pullen, Chair of communications and Theatre. Old Dominion University

"Ryan McIntire fires out directions from the house and wings and all points in between. He’s like a retired Irish boxer from the nineteenth century trapped in an adjunct professor’s body. [everyone] knows they have something that not only should be seen, it needs to be seen."

-David Paul Klineman, ALTdaily review of Antigone.

"It's a singularly brutal tour de force"
-Frank C. Siraguso, review of Romeo and Juliet, Kansas City Infozine

"Katurian was played superbly by Ryan Quinn McIntire ... I wanted to hit a rewind button and watch it again and again."

-Rico Robinson, Review of The Pillowman by Martin Mcdonagh

"your classes have been my favorite courses here at ODU, and that is easily due to you. I appreciate the passion and challenges you showed us, and your care for us all."
-Jomar Pablo, 2014 graduate Old Dominion University.

"Take all the family drama in every soap opera and reality show and then multiply it by the Habsburgs and the Kennedys and the Clintons. Add Omarosa and Osama bin Laden and Ted Cruz. You still wouldn’t have half the family drama in [Mcintire's] Antigone,"

-David Paul Klineman, ALTdaily review of Antigone.

Distinguished Adjunct Award, 2016 nomination. Old Dominion University
